Splice Machine Creates Open Source RDBMS Sandbox for AWS

Posted on November 11, 2022 By Salome

Splice Machine Inc. has made its Big Data RDBMS open-source and today announced a new sandbox in the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), where data developers can explore dual-engine technology.
These two engines are Apache Hadoop/Apache Spark. They, along with other open-source components, form the foundation for Splice Machine 2.0. It is available in both a licensed enterprise edition as well as a free community edition.
The Splice Machine RDBMS combines the best of both SQL and NoSQL. It provides ANSI SQL on Hadoop to support ACID (Atomicity Consistency Isolation, Durability) transactions, scale-out capabilities, and in-memory query performance.
“Now generally available, Splice Machine2.0 integrates Apache Spark (a fast, open-source engine to large-scale data processing), into its existing Hadoop architecture, creating a flexible and hybrid database that enables companies to perform simultaneous OLAP/OLTP workloads,” the company stated in a statement today.
Following up on its announcement last month that its technology would be open-source, the company today announced the 2.0 Community Edition. The AWS Sandbox is intended to be an easy way to get started with the technology.
The company stated that the Splice Machine V2.0 sandbox, powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), allows developers to create clusters in minutes. The sandbox allows developers to select the number of cluster nodes and the type of each node to allow for a variety of tests, small to large.
The company offers three options to try the community edition. You can either spin up a Splice Machine cluster using an Amazon E2 account, or download it to a Mac OS X or CentOS-based machine. Or, you can download a cluster edition to run on Cloudera, MapR, or Hortonworks Hadoop distributions.
Splice Machine launched a community site in conjunction with the free edition. It features tutorials, videos and links to community events like meetups.
Monte Zweben, cofounder and CEO of Splice Machine, stated that he is excited about the software being released and the development of a community. “We want to make it as easy for developers to obtain Splice Machine and to test it at scale. Our Community edition includes a fully functional RDBMS, which allows teams to evaluate Splice Machine. Our Enterprise edition has additional DevOps features that allow you to secure operate Splice Machine 24×7.

Previous Post: Splice Machine Courts Early Adopters to Test New Cloud RDBMS Service Splice Machine Inc. today announced an early adopter program to test its upcoming Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) offering on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud. This is not the company’s first venture into AWS cloud space. Last summer, it announced an AWS sandbox for its newly open-sourced, SQL-based RDBMS to support Big Data analytics. In November, the company released version 2.5 of its platform. It boasts hybrid capabilities that can simultaneously process online transaction processing (OLTP), and online analytical processing workloads using components such Apache Hadoop or Apache Spark. It is now offering incentives to early adopters to test the AWS offering, which will be available in spring. Here are the criteria for participation:

AWS joins the Hybrid Cloud Fray in VMware Partnership Virtualization giant VMware (AWS), and Amazon Web Services (AWS), have partnered on a hybrid cloud service called “VMware Cloud on AWS.” AWS CEO Andy Jassy, and VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the new offering at a press conference in San Francisco on Thursday. Gelsinger described it as an “industry-shaping” announcement. According to a joint press release, VMware Cloud Foundation powers VMware Cloud on AWS. This unified SDDC [software defined datacenter] platform integrates VMware vSphere and VMware Virtual SAN virtualization technologies and provides access to all AWS services. The partnership will allow VMware’s SDDC software to run on AWS public clouds. This will enable integration between VMware’s infrastructure solutions and AWS services like storage and analytics. The companies stated that this will allow mutual customers to “run applications in a consistent hybrid ecosystem using a common set and familiar software and tools.” Although the service is built on AWS’ platform it is still VMware’s to sell. AWS can be used to purchase VMware Cloud for organizations through existing VMware commercial agreements. This deal makes Amazon VMware the primary public cloud partner. AWS will make VMware its preferred private cloud partner. Jassy stated that VMware Cloud on AWS was only the beginning of a “rich circle of innovation” between the companies during Thursday’s press conference. VMware Cloud on AWS will be generally available by mid-2017. The solution is currently in private technical preview. An invitation-only beta is scheduled for early 2017.
