AWS joins the Hybrid Cloud Fray in VMware Partnership Virtualization giant VMware (AWS), and Amazon Web Services (AWS), have partnered on a hybrid cloud service called “VMware Cloud on AWS.” AWS CEO Andy Jassy, and VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the new offering at a press conference in San Francisco on Thursday. Gelsinger described it as an “industry-shaping” announcement. According to a joint press release, VMware Cloud Foundation powers VMware Cloud on AWS. This unified SDDC [software defined datacenter] platform integrates VMware vSphere and VMware Virtual SAN virtualization technologies and provides access to all AWS services. The partnership will allow VMware’s SDDC software to run on AWS public clouds. This will enable integration between VMware’s infrastructure solutions and AWS services like storage and analytics. The companies stated that this will allow mutual customers to “run applications in a consistent hybrid ecosystem using a common set and familiar software and tools.” Although the service is built on AWS’ platform it is still VMware’s to sell. AWS can be used to purchase VMware Cloud for organizations through existing VMware commercial agreements. This deal makes Amazon VMware the primary public cloud partner. AWS will make VMware its preferred private cloud partner. Jassy stated that VMware Cloud on AWS was only the beginning of a “rich circle of innovation” between the companies during Thursday’s press conference. VMware Cloud on AWS will be generally available by mid-2017. The solution is currently in private technical preview. An invitation-only beta is scheduled for early 2017. AWS Joins the Effort to Standardize Container Technology Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), is joining forces with a number of software container industry players to bring order and standardization into this increasingly popular technology. Containerization is a way for developers to bundle their programs with all the dependencies so that they can run on different platforms. It has been called “the hottest technology” in Silicon Valley by The Wall Street Journal. Although Docker Inc. was the main force behind containerization technology, other industry efforts threatened the technology’s segmentation. Today Docker, AWS, and a host of other companies announced that they are joining forces to create the Open Container Project (OCP). This will allow for open standards and ensure interoperability. The OCP states that while there is a lot of innovation in this space, containers’ promise of portability and application portability requires the establishment if certain standards about format and runtime. “While Docker’s rapid growth has made the Docker image format a standard for many purposes, there is a lot of interest in a single container specification.” The specification will include three key characteristics: Uncategorized
AWS is the Top Choice for IoT Development According to a Survey, Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), is the best choice for Internet of Things development. The online survey was conducted by the Eclipse IoT Working Group and reflected other surveys on cloud computing topics. AWS is the dominant cloud computing provider, while the Microsoft Azure cloud is striving to be No. 2. According to the fourth annual IoT Developer Survey, the Google Cloud Platform is struggling in the IoT space. Benjamin Cabe, the survey’s point person, said that AWS was not surprising to be ahead of the pack. According to the Stack Overflow Developer Survey, AWS is the preferred public cloud platform for developers and the most popular platform for development in general. The same survey shows that Google’s Cloud Platform is not doing well (only 8.0 percent use it, compared to 24.1 percent for AWS). In fact, although GCP is “struggling to get adopted by IoT developers”, nearly 52 percent of respondents to the Eclipse-backed survey cited AWS as their preferred IoT platform, a 21 percent increase over the 2017 study. According to reports, Microsoft Azure was named by 31% of respondents, an increase of 17 percent over the survey last year. Google came in at nearly 19 percent, a decrease of 8 percent. AWS is the Leader in Enterprise Cloud Migrations Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), is the leader in a growing list of services that help businesses move to the cloud. A new survey concluded that AWS is the best. Skyhigh Networks recently published the “Cloud Adoption & Risk Report Q4 2014.” This report, which was based on data from approximately 15 million users, focuses primarily on security, compliance, and governance concerns, but also offers many insights into cloud usage. The number of cloud services that are available continues to rise, with a 43 percent increase in the fourth quarter 2013. Respondents reported that they used an average of 897 cloud-based services, up from 626 last yea. Skyhigh executive Kamal Shah stated in an accompanying statement that 2014 will be remembered as the year the cloud was introduced as a fundamental tool to the Global 5000 enterprise. “On average, 27 cloud services are used by employees.” According to the report, “The Cloud has created a new wave in enterprise software that is faster to develop, easier deploy, and more cost-effective, but also offers innovative features that are not available elsewhere.” This is because cloud-based software is the most popular way to innovate today. Survey data shows that AWS remains the leader in enterprise cloud services. According to the report, Amazon Web Services is still the leader in enterprise cloud services, followed closely by services from industry giants Microsoft and Salesforce. It was noted that AWS competitors like Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft have been acquiring other companies to gain access to AWS. This is in pursuit of AWS, which was the pioneering movement in 2006.
